In Lake County, authorities say no one was hurt in a fire at Griffith-Merrillville Airport late Thursday night. A news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department says shortly after 11:30 pm March 21, 2024, an officer with Lake County Sheriff’s Police who was on patrol reported a small fire at the airport. Authorities say nine area jurisdictions responded to the scene. Officials say flames caused the roof of one of the hangars to collapse. The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating to determine the cause and any possible damage to aircraft, officials said. By about 3:30 am this morning Friday March 22, 2024, the sheriff’s department says flames were extinguished, but first responders remained on the scene to watch for any hotspots or areas that may have rekindled. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit has a hangar and aircraft at the facility which were not damaged, officials said.
