Two Hospitalized with Non Life-Threatening Injuries in CP

Two people were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries after a two-vehicle crash late this morning in Crown Point. Crown Point Assistant Police Chief James Janda say they received the call just after 11:30 this morning in the 200 block of South Court Street. Janda says the crash caused one of the vehicles involved to strike a utility pole, which knocked down some wires, and that the driver of that vehicle had to extricated, which caused a temporary road closure.

Update: Shooting Death Monday Afternoon in Gary

Police in Gary are seeking the public's help after a shooting death Monday afternoon. Gary Police Corp. Gabrielle King says officers were dispatched to the 11-hundred block of Connecticut Street at 4:20pm for reports of a man down. The Lake County Coroners office says 56-year-old Donald McHenry, of Gary, suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:15 Monday evening, and his death was ruled a homicide. Corp. King says witnesses reported at the same time shots were heard, that a black male was observed in the area between the age of 19 and 20 years old, approximately 5'10”, with a slender build and dreadlocks. Man Arrested on Preliminary Murder Charge

In La Porte, authorities are investigating an apparent homicide. Police say a 60-year-old La Porte man has been preliminarily charged with murder after his 48-year-old wife was found dead in their home overnight. La Porte Police say at about 12:30 this morning their officers were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of “E” Street for a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, police say a man who lived there with his wife was apprehended coming out of the residence, and later taken to the La Porte County Jail, based on the department's preliminary investigation and evidence collected at the scene. Police say they discovered the body of the man's wife inside the residence, and the investigation is ongoing.  La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan says a forensic autopsy is being performed today in Mishawaka.

Woman Struck and Killed by Train

Authorities say a 58-year-old Valparaiso woman was struck and killed by a train in Valparaiso Monday night in what has preliminarily been ruled an apparent suicide. Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris says his office was dispatched just before 8:30 pm and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene in the area of Silhavy Drive and Grand Trunk Road.

Munster PD Getting New Ford Interceptors

In Munster, the police department is getting six new Ford Police Interceptors – made just across the state line – to replace older squads in their fleet. The Munster Town Council has approved the lease/purchase of the 2014 all-wheel drive vehicles, which are manufactured at the Ford Chicago Assembly Plant in Hegewisch.

Highland Names New School Supt

The newly-named school superintendent in Highland is Brian Smith, who currently holds that post in the North Newton school district. Smith officially joins Highland on July first. He's been school superintendent for North Newton for the past four years. He replaces Highland School Superintendent Michael Boskovich, whose retirement takes effect the end of this month (Jun 30). Boskovich began his career with Highland schools forty years ago as a teacher at the high school, and he's been superintendent since 2007.

WGU Indiana Enters Fourth Year; Tuition Steady

WGU Indiana, the state's nonprofit, online university, is marking its third anniversary with an announcement that tuition rates remain unchanged, at six-thousand dollars a year for most programs. Since its inception in 2010, WGU Indiana’s enrollment has grown to more than 33-hundred students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and 799 students have graduated. Hammond Approves Library Funds

In Hammond, the city council has approved over half-a-million dollars of library funds that have been earmarked for maintenance and repairs at the Hammond Public Library – including fixing the broken air conditioning at the building on State Street in downtown Hammond . The council gave initial approval in May, and a final vote was taken Monday night. Library officials say the money is available, but couldn't be used without council approval, and most of it is out of the library's rainy day fund.

Crown Point to Review City Buildings

In Crown Point, city officials are taking an overview of city buildings, including the emergency services building, which houses police and fire, and was built in 1990, and City Hall, constructed in 1950... looking at maintenance and utility costs, and overall functionality of the physical structures themselves. The police department has grown to more than forty officers, with three additional hires planned, and fire rescue to nearly 30, with a new hire just announced.
