Algae Wheels Are Turnin'

Our Tom Lounges covered this for us Wednesday... getting the scoop on "algae wheels"... The Indiana DNR not only dedicated their award-winning daylighting project at Indiana Dunes State Park (see separate story online in Region News), they also took the wraps off of their new wastewater treatment plant -- one of only ten such facilities installed in the United States. The plant is expected to use 75 percent less energy than the previous plant, which was more than 40-years old and required expensive yearly maintenance.  The plant uses an "algae wheel" system that supplements the bacterial treatment process with algae to prodce a "high-quality effluent, emit negligible carbon dioxide, and generate less solid waste", says the Indiana DNR.
