Ill Smoke Tax to Double

In just over a week, the cigarette tax in Illinois will more than double. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn today signed into law five laws his office says are designed to save Medicaid, and they include Senate Bill 2194, which adds a tax to the price-per-pack, raising the tax in Illinois to a-dollar-98 starting June 24. Governor Quinn's office says it'll raise hundreds of millions of dollars for hospitals and help offset Medicaid cuts that take effect July first. The cigarette tax in Indiana is about 99-cents.
