State regulators in Indiana have approved new rules for tree-trimming by utility companies, standardizing the process for NIPSCO and Indiana's four other investor-owned utilities. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Wednesday adopted a measure that among other things prohibits the utilities from topping trees or removing more than 25-percent of the tree without the owner's permission -- unless it's an emergency. The I-U-R-C traveled to six locations around the state, including Merrillville, to get feedback from the public on this issue in a 19-month investigation. The I-U-R-C says the new rules balance the need to ensure service with the customers desire to preserve their landscapes.
