Two well-known areas of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore are getting new names to reflect their history and better represent already-existing geological descriptions of the park. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Supervisory Park Ranger Bruce Rowe says from an interpretive standpoint, it was felt the areas should be named after their specific dune ridges -- and that it would help people better understand "that not all the sand dunes at Indiana Dunes are right along the lakefront. " Inland Marsh is now Tolleston Dunes, and Ly-Co-Ki-We Trail is becoming the Glenwood Dune Trail.

Rowe says Inland Marsh was actually named for Inland Steel that once owned part of that area. Meanwhile, Rowe also says their research has determined that “Ly-Co-Ki-We” is not a Native American term. Through the years, Rowe says there was an informal understanding that “Ly-Co-Ki-We” meant something like sandy ground, but again they've determined that does not appear to be the case.
