Authorities believe two people may have been killed when a small plane crashed Wednesday morning in a wooded area behind the West Gary Lighthouse Charter School at 7th and Clark on the northwest side of Gary. Gary Fire Chief Teresa Everett says the Gary Fire Department responded at approximately 11:20 am as 911 calls came in. The crash site is about one mile southeast of Gary/Chicago International Airport. A team from the Lake County Coroners office including Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey responded. Officials say the plane had flown out of Smyrna, Tennessee, and was enroute to Gary/Chicago International Airport. Gary/Chicago International Airport Interim Director Steven Landry says the crash did not occur on airport property. It's unclear how many people were on board.
