The 12th and final opportunity of the year to exchange your old gas can with a new one takes place this Saturday in Munster. Kathy Luther, Director of Environmental Programs for the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission, says the exchange is free, saves you money, and at the same time, helps to improve air quality in the region. Luther says through 11 events this year, they have exchanged about 800 gas cans with new, two-point-five gallon no-spill cans, which has eliminated approximately one-point-two tons of air pollution, while also helping to eliminate the 17 million gallons of gas spilled each year from leaks during lawn mower fill ups. She also stated that you can bring in other household hazardous waste materials, like batteries, paint thinning, old bug spray, and cleaning chemicals to name a few. The final exchange takes place Saturday, from 9am to 2pm, at Munster Public Works, located at 508 Fisher Street.
