INDOT Winter Weather Update – 12/21/12
As of 10:30 a.m. Central Time/11:30 a.m. Eastern time, most of the 170+ plows in INDOT's LaPorte District are on the roads. District-wide we are seeing an excess of blowing and drifting snow due to the high wind gusts. More slick spots are developing, especially on bridges, overpasses, and ramps.
To the west, roads in the northern parts of Lake County are in the best shape compared to the rest of the district. Most roads are in fair to good condition with minimal slick spots. I-80/94 is clear now, but crews are staying on top of it, spreading salt as needed.
Much of Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, and Marshall Counties are experiencing lots of blowing and drifting snow with slick spots developing. Two crews are working to clear the U.S. 20 Bypass through salting and plowing. In addition, parts of U.S. 35 between U.S. 30 and S.R. 8 are hard-packed and slick.
To the south, Winamac, Monticello, and Logansport areas are reporting excessive blowing and drifting snow, especially on north-south roadways.
Remember, in case of a power outage, intersections without functioning traffic signals should be treated as 4-way stops.
INDOT says Iplow drivers are working to make state highways as safe as possible, but winter driving safety is a partnership where motorists play an equally important role. Drivers must slow down, brake early, and exercise safe winter driving skills while giving our plows plenty of room to work.
