First Signs of West Nile

State health officials Wednesday confirmed the first signs of West Nile virus activity in Indiana this year from mosquitoes testing positive in far southern Orange County. The first positive mosquitoes found in the state last year weren't until mid-July. The Indiana State Department of Health advises Hoosiers to avoid being outdoors during prime mosquito biting times from dusk to dawn,to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when possible; and to install or repair screens on windows and doors, and also to frequently replace the water in pet bowls and to flush ornamental fountains and birdbaths periodically. The state says more than 20 Hoosiers have died from the illness, including one person last year, since Indiana had its first human case of West Nile virus in 2002.
