Buck Creek State Senator Brandt Hershman Monday proposed a legislative plan to reward Indiana’s highest performing public schools with additional state funding. Under the proposal, Indiana public school corporations achieving ISTEP+ pass rates of 85 percent or higher on both the math and English/language arts portions of the test would receive an extra five-hundred-dollars per passing student. Hershman says K-thru-12 education funding accounts for more than half of Indiana’s general fund budget, including a remediation amount of nearly three-million a year for schools with the lowest scores in the state. Hershman said with funding set aside for under-performing schools, it’s time to appropriate money to reward high-performing schools.
