The 10th annual Cops Cycling for Survivors bicycle ride enters Northwest Indiana today . Fifty-three cyclists left Indianapolis Monday for a nearly two-week-long journey that will cover nearly one-thousand miles along the perimeter of Indiana to raise funds for surviving family members and co-workers of officers killed in the line-of-duty thru the Indiana Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors.
Indiana State Police Master Trooper Sgt. Rich Crawford says after leaving Mishawaka, they'll be stopping in LaPorte County, visiting the gravesites of two officers who lost their lives in the line of duty a number of years ago. From LaPorte County, the ride goes to Porter County, where they'll meet with members of the Patrick family. Indiana State Trooper Scott Patrick lost his life in the line of duty in Gary in 2003, as he responded to help a motorist at a disabled vehicle on Interstate 80/94 and was shot to death. They will also be stopping at the Porter County Sheriffs Department, then traveling to Merrillville for the night.
Retired Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin and Indiana State Police Lt. Gary Dudley gave their lives in the line of duty while participating in the ride August 22, 2006, when a box truck crashed into the rear of the support truck that was following the cyclists as they rode south on State Road 63 downstate.
