A five-year-boy from Chicago Heights was rescued from the waters of Lake Michigan at West Beach Thursday Afternoon... National Park Service lifeguards on duty found the child about twenty yards from shore, and he was eventually airlifted from a local hospital to Chicago. His condition was not available this morning. At about 4 pm, officials say one of a group of thirteen adults notified lifeguards the child had gone missing, and after a land and water search the child was found about ten minutes later. The boy received immediate emergency medical care on shore before being transferred to the advance life support unit of the Portage Fire Department, a news release stated, then was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary before being airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Rip currents have been a danger recently, but a spokesperson for the National Park Service says yesterday was actually a fairly calm day at West Beach.
