Flags to be Half-Mast at Purdue

Acting Purdue President Tim Sands is asking that Purdue flags on campus be flown at half-staff to remember Neil Armstrong, a Purdue alumnus who became the first human to set foot on the moon. Armstrong died Saturday [Aug 25] at the age of 82.  Sands says Armstrong was "a humble and private person, but always willing to talk to students."  Armstrong earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue in aeronautical engineering in 1955 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering from Purdue in 1970. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became
the first person to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo Eleven.  In West Lafayette, Purdue Student Government will hold a memorial service for Armstrong this afternoon [ 5:30 p.m. EDT Monday (Aug. 27)] at the Armstrong statue in front of Neil A. Armstrong Hall of Engineering.   University officials add that Armstrong was a huge football fan, citing that as one of the reasons he chose Purdue... and they noted that Armstrong played the baritone horn in the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band in 1952.
