2 men trapped inside a burning home in Gary last night were rescued, but one of the homeowners two dogs did not survive. Patti Van Til, Public Information Officer for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, says a house fire was reported just before 11, on the city's southwest side, and that Officer Amber Thomas entered the fully engulfed home and was able to individually retrieve two men, ages 28 and 80 years old, who were lying on the floor. The homeowners then advised officers of two-dogs located in the garage, which were both rescued by Officer Mike Stewart. Van Till says Officer Stewart performed C-P-R on one of the dogs, a husky-mix and while it was able to pull through, the other died due to smoke inhalation. Both men were treated at the scene by medics.
