A 24-year-old Gary man has been charged with theft after police allege he opened a woman's passenger-side car door outside Macy's at Westfield Southlake Friday morning and stole her purse, an incident in which the Times says about twenty people came to the victim's aid, chasing the suspect across Highway 30 and calling police on their cellphones. The man was reportedly found hiding under a car outside one of the stores on the other side of US 30.
