Electrical problems caused significant delays on the South Shore Wednesday morning. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District officials say it appears there was an issue with a substation in the Ogden Dunes area that may have been the result of a problem from an outage Sunday. Authorities say a NIPSCO high-voltage conductor splice failed, and dropped onto the State Road 49 bridge over the commuter rail line. Yesterday morning, NICTD says there may have also been residual damage to a lightning arrestor. The disruption during Wednesday morning's rush hour affected service between Michigan City Carroll Avenue and East Chicago.
