This reminder today from Valparaiso's Director of Public Works: Matt Evans says city residents have only a couple of weeks left to get those leaves out to the street for the leaf vacuums. Last pass for those vacuums this season in Valpo is November thirtieth. After that date, residents are asked to bag the leaves in biodegradable paper lawn bags – no plastic – and leave them out on trash day. Here's more info from the city's website:
From Valparaiso Public Works:
Leave your leaves
The city’s fleet of leaf trucks and vacuums are geared up and will begin picking up leaves October 15 through November 30, 2012. Generally, leaves will be picked up on the same day as trash, however it may take more than one day to finish a route. Crews will pick up where they left off the previous day, finishing that route before moving on to the next. During the heaviest times, crews will work Saturdays.
When it comes to leaves, remember:
No need to call to tell us you have leaves out; our crews will cover all streets as described above
Crews will begin at 7:00 am and continue until dark, if necessary.
Leave your leaves in the right-of-way – off the street - for pick up.
Leaves should be the only thing in the pile – no sticks, bricks, boards or other items. Mixed piles will not be picked up!
Although it’s preferable to leave leaves unbagged during leaf pick-up season, leaves may be placed in biodegradable bags (NO plastic) or covered with a tarp at the curb to prevent them from blowing.
Can't wait? Residents may drop off their leaves and brush at the compost site.
Please bag any leaves prior to Oct. 15 and after the leaf pick-up season ends on Nov. 30.
