This time of year is known as “the season of giving”, but area law enforcement want you to be aware of potential scams so you don't accidentally give away your personal information. Sargent Larry LaFlower, with the Porter County Sheriff's Office, says they have been informed of two scams in the last couple of weeks regarding the post office, where callers claiming to be from the post office are trying to get your personal information. Sargent LaFlower says said another scam to watch out for are from callers claiming to be from the Lottery, and that you must purchase a gift card to claim a prize. In this case Sargent LaFlower says, if you won the lottery, you should have the ticket in-hand and you go and claim it, and if it is too good to be true, than it usually is. He says both of these types of scams are just trying to prey on your weak spots and that most of these scams target the elderly.
