Chicago has been named the fourth most miserable city in the U.S. Number one was Detroit, followed by Flint, Michigan; and Rockford, Illinois with Modesto, California, rounding out the top five. Gary was in the top 20, at number 19; Milwaukee was 14. The article noted violent crime being down dramatically in Gary in recent years, but said the city is still plagued by high foreclosures and a migration out of the city. To compile their annual list, Forbes analyzes 200 of the country's largest urban areas and ranks them on factors like crime rates, commute times, foreclosures, home prices, income and property taxes, and weather. They also tweaked their misery-measuring methodology this year, responding to feedback from readers... dropping political corruption and rankings of both pro sports team success and adding a new measure—net migration.
