The town of Lowell will need to find a new police chief, as Chief John Shelhart is stepping down later this month. The Times reports Chief Shelhart informed the Lowell Town Council and Police Commission members of his decision on Monday, due to personal reasons. Published reports say Shelhart began his 32 year career in law enforcement with the Merrillville Police Department, working his way up the ranks from patrolman to chief of police. The Times reports a replacement or acting chief has not yet been announced.
