Cause Not Yet Known in Whiting Fire

Whiting fire crews were still looking for and fighting hotspots Monday at a century-old building at 119th and Sheridan that burned Sunday night, displacing several residents who lived in apartments in the three-story structure. The building also housed a dress shop. The cause has not yet been determined. There were no reports of injuries.

Prevent Frozen Pipes Depsite Cold Air Over Region

There are three main reasons why water pipes freeze.  Laura Gerhardt of Absolutely and Above Board Construction in Chesterton says according to the different insurance agency they work with,  the three causes of pipes to freeze are:   a quick temperature drop,  two days in-a-row of single digit temperatures and poor insulation around pipes-especially pipes that run along exterior walls.  Gerhardt says other reasons include, setting the thermostat too low at night because people have gotten used...

Wind Chill Advisory in Effect for the Region

A wind chill advisory is in effect from the National Weather Service through 10 am Tuesday morning.  Wind Chills of between 15 degrees below zero and 25 degrees below zero are possible in the Region and Chicagoland vicinity.  The weather service urges people to limit any outdoor activity and reminds everyone that frostbite can occur to exposed skin in 30 minutes.

The monthly Indiana Real Estate Markets Report today released by the state’s REALTORS® also provides year-end data which shows that 2012 was a strong turnaround year for Indiana housing markets.
Statewide, there were 8,531 more homes sold in 2012 than in 2011 – a 14.7 percent increase year-over-year. Fire Crews in Whiting Work Into the Night

In downtown Whiting, part of 119 Street was still closed this morning after fire breaks out Sunday evening in a three-story building at 119th and Sheridan, displacing several residents. The building houses a dress shop and several apartments. There was no word of any injuries. Fire crews were reportedly still on scene this morning, putting out and looking for hot spots. No word on possible cause at this hour.

Gun Permit Procedures Changing in Valpo

News Release (Jan 21 2013):  Beginning Monday February 4th the Valparaiso Police Department's gun permit procedures will be changing. On Monday gun permit applicants will first be required to apply online for a gun permit and within 30 days schedule an appointment at L1 Solutions to be electronically fingerprinted.
