Region's Own Serves Aboard Advanced US Navy Sub

Justin Short

A U.S. Navy missile technician from Gary is serving aboard one of the world's most advanced submarines.  According to the Navy's Office of Community Outreach, Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Short is currently defending America aboard the USS Louisiana.  The Navy's ballistic missile submarines, often called "boomers," serve as undetectable launch platforms for intercontinetal ballistic missiles and are designed for extended patrols, spending an average of 77-days at seas.

"Why Being There Matters"
On our planet, more than 70 percent of which is covered by water, being there means having the ability to act from the sea.  The Navy is uniquely positioned to be there; the world's oceans give the Navy the power to protect America's interests anywhere, and at any time. Your Navy protects and defends America on the world's oceans.  Navy ships, submarines, aircraft and, most importantly, tens of thousands of America's finest young men and women are deployed around the world doing just that.  They are there now.  They will be there when we are sleeping tonight.  They will be there every Saturday, Sunday and holiday this year.  They are there around the clock, far from our shores, defending America at all times.

Thank you very much for your support of the men and women in U.S. Navy, deployed around the clock and ready to protect and defend America on the world's oceans.

Vehicle Car-jacked on 80/94 with Teen passenger Inside

isp

A Lansing, Michigan teen, who was able provide passing landmarks during an early morning car-jacking on I-80/94, results in the suspects arrest.

State Police at the Lowell post say at around 5:35 this morning they received a call of a carjacking incident taking place inside the Illinois line on Interstate 80/94.  Preliminary reports say that a Chevrolet van driven by a Chicago woman heading eastbound reportedly rear-ended a silver SUV driven by a Lansing, Michigan man.  After both vehicles were pulled over, the Lansing driver walked back to the van to see if the woman was alright.  At which time police say the woman, identified as 32 year-old Larona L. Green had climbed into the SUV and fled the scene into Indiana.  The Lansing man told police that his van had been stolen with his 13 year-old son in the front seat.  Authorities learned that his son had a cell phone and was able to provide landmarks as the suspect drove along.

Reports say a state trooper patrolling near the 23 mile marker on I-94 spotted the vehicle pulled it over taking Green into custody.  The teen passenger was uninjured.

The suspect was taken to Porter County Jail and charged with O.W.I. (tested.119 B.A.C.), possession of a stolen vehicle and criminal confinement.  Other charges in Illinois are pending, according to the Indiana State police.  Assisting at the scene were units from the Lowell Post, Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Units, Illinois State Police and Porter County Sheriff’s Department. The investigation is continuing.
