The execution of a narcotics search warrant this morning in Gary resulted in officers being fired upon and a 30 year old man being shot. Gary Police Public Information Officer Corp. Gabrielle King says officers arrived at a residence, in the five-thousand block of Virginia Street just before 7am, knocked on the door and announced it was the police and had a search warrant. Corp. King says, at that time, 30 year old Dwayne Gunn, who was inside the residence, fired shots at the officers. Officers began to retreat as Gunn continued to fire shots at them. Corp. King says an officer returned fire and Gunn was struck and taken into custody and transported to the emergency room for treatment of his injuries which police say do not appear to be life-threatening.
Corp. King says since a Gary Police officer was involved in the shooting, an investigation will be handled by the Lake County Sheriff's Department. Police say, at this time, no narcotics have been recovered because of the shooting, as the scene had to be processed first before a search could be conducted to search for any narcotics.
