Hundreds of Meal On Wheels Volunteers Honored

This time is was the more than 200 volunteers of Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana who were on the receiving end of a meal at an appreciation program recently given by the organization in Merrillville. According to Joan Vith, Volunteer Manager, the family-style meal at Avalon Manor last Wednesday was, "a way to thank them for the meals they serve all year long. 

According to a Meals on Wheels press release, over 30 individuals received the Presidential award.  The Presidential award is earned by donating more than 100 hours per year for a non-profit organization.  The award includes a personalized letter signed by President Barack Obama, a certificate, and a bronze pin.  Two individuals, Ora Kennedy and James Sullivan, received the Presidential Silver Award, which is awarded for donating more than 250 hours per year.  Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Sullivan received a silver pin for their recognition along with the certificate and personalized letter.

“In addition to individuals, three corporate/civic volunteers received plaques for 5, 15 and 20 years of service to Meals on Wheels,” said Joan Vith, Volunteer Manager.  “We could not deliver our meals without the generous support of community and civic organizations.”   McColly Real Estate, represented by Bruce Spindler, received a plaque for 5 years of service.   The Hammond Marina, represented by Bryan Gaal and Keith Carey, received a plaque for 15 years of service to our Whiting community, and Centier Bank, represented by Carol Highsmith, received a plaque for 20 years of assisting us in delivering meals in Whiting, Merrillville, Lowell, and Crown Point.
