Ex-Pastor Seeks to Overturn Sentence

An attorney for the former leader of First Baptist Church of Hammond is seeking to get his client's sentence overturned. According to a report in the Times, the Florida lawyer contends defense attorneys for Jack Schaap provided ineffective counsel. Two months ago, the ex-pastor of the megachurch in north Lake County acted as his own attorney in trying to overturn his 12-year prison sentence, contending his attorneys represented the likely length of his sentence in relation to the guilty plea as being less than it was, and that his attorneys should have put forth mitigating factors during sentencing proceedings Schaap pleaded guilty in 2012 to interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
