Purdue Cal About to Become Doctoral-Granting University

In response to demand for advanced practice nurses, Purdue University Calumet in Hammond is poised to become a doctoral-granting university. By partnering with the main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, and eventually Purdue North Central in Westville, Purdue Calumet plans to offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in northwest Indiana, expanding the program currently available at West Lafayette. Purdue Calumet Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost and former Dean of the College of Nursing Peggy Gerard says they anticipate admitting students for fall 2015. The program will be primarily online but will also require students to choose a home campus for periodic, on-campus, face-to-face and supervised residency and practical experiences.  Students who select Purdue Calumet as their home campus and complete degree requirements subsequently will graduate with a Purdue doctoral degree from the Hammond campus. “With DNP programs across Indiana at maximum capacity, this collaborative offering provides greater opportunities for practicing nurses and recent master’s graduates to positively impact the state’s health care environment,” Gerard said. The Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE) has approved the collaborative program, the first doctoral offering ICHE has granted at regional universities. Approval to become a doctoral-granting university also is needed by the Higher Learning Commission. Nursing accrediting bodies must provide approval as well before students can be admitted.  “Advancing our region and state by addressing specific needs has been a cornerstone of Purdue University Calumet,” Chancellor Thomas L. Keon said. “We are pleased to collaborate with this historic doctoral program that will increase nursing expertise while expanding affordable health care options to Indiana residents.”
