Kouts Enforcing Curfew After Increase in Property Damage

In Kouts, due to the recent increase in property damage and vandalism occurring to private property as well as town property, the town is aggressively enforcing their curfew ordinance. Kouts Police Chief James Smith told the Region News Team they've had private property damage to gardens, landscaping damage at the park and at the school a portion of the track was blow up using fireworks.

Under the town ordinance, all children under the age of 18 are not allowed to loiter, linger, congregate or play upon the streets, alleys or public grounds between the hours of 11pm and 6am, seven-days a weeks, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. If a child is found out after curfew, they will be detained by police, a ticket will be issued and a report forwarded to the Porter County Juvenile Department. Chief Smith says the first offense fine is 25 dollars and each subsequent violation will double to a maximum of 25-hundred dollars.
