The Valparaiso Family YMCA is teaching pre-school to 7th grade school the importance gardening and eating healthy, through their Green Thumb Garden. Liz Burnham, with the Valparaiso Family YMCA, told the Region News Team it also teaches the children about what green space can be used for and how they can grow their own vegetables and what they look like. She says the children planted all the seeds, have been picking weeds and have been watering and watching the plants grow. The children will harvest the veggies when they are ready and Burnham says the kids will have cooking classes to learn how to prepare and eat them for lunch.

Burnham says the children are growing green beans, lettuce, carrots tomatoes, potatoes, snap peas, basil and other various herbs.
