In Merrillville, student ID cards are being replaced by fingerprints in the school cafeteria. Each student in the Merrillviille Community School Corporation whose finger was scanned before school ended last month will put their right index finger on the scanner to identify themselves, and the cost of lunch will be automatically deducted from their account as they go through the lunch line. Parents were notified in advance of the scanning and some opted not to have it done; those students will continue using the bar code on their ID to purchase food. Parents will still be able to put money on their child’s lunch account and check the balance on the internet. Merrillville school officials say many student IDs are left home or lost before the student lunch period starts, and they hope the new system runs more smoothly.
