Governor Meets With Slain Gary Officer's Family

governoringary2

Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says authorities are fairly confident that a person of interest in custody in connection with the shooting death of a Gary Police officer is the person who committed the crime. Veteran officer Jeffrey Westerfield, who turned 47 Sunday, was found dead inside his patrol car at 26th and Van Buren Sunday morning. Indiana Governor Mike Pence met with Westerfield's family at the Gary Public Safety Facility Tuesday. The governor has declared an official period of mourning to honor the loss of three Indiana police officers in the line of duty in the course of one week. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Perry Renn was fatally shot Saturday night. Tipton County Sheriffs Deputy Jacob Calvin was killed in an on-duty crash June 28th. The governor has ordered flags to be lowered across the state until funeral services for all three officers have been held.  [Photo courtesy Governor's Office]

Funeral arrangements for Officer Jeff Westerfield are as follows:
Visitation Sunday from 2-8pm and the funeral will begin Monday at 11am both at the Genesis Convention Center.
Staging for officers participating in the ceremony will begin at 8:30am. (Information from Gary Police Department Facebook page)

A memorial account to accept donations for Officer Westerfield's family has been established through Gary FOP Lodge 61 at BMO Harris bank. Anyone not able to locate a BMO Harris nearby can mail donations to:
