3:00 pm update:

Gary Police say a small plane crashed today near 7th and Clark Road.  Gary Police Public Information Officer Corporal Gabrielle King says the crash occurred in a wooded area behind the West Gary Lighthouse Charter School at 7th and Clark.  Gary Fire Chief Teresa Everett says the Gary Fire Department responded to at approximately 11:20 am as 911 calls came in. The crash site is about one mile southeast of Gary/Chicago International Airport. Chief Everett says the fire is out.

A team from the Lake County Coroners office including Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey has been on scene.  No information about fatalities has been confirmed as of yet, as crews continue to investigate. We have unconfirmed reports that at least one person may be dead.

Officials say the plane had flown out of Smyrna, Tennessee.  It was still unclear whether the aircraft was headed to Gary/Chicago International Airport. Gary/Chicago International Airport Interim Director Steven Landry says the crash did not occur on airport property.

It's also unclear how many people were on board.
