Indiana University Northwest and the Gary Police Department on Monday announced they are collaborating to launch a Citizens Police Academy to begin in January. Authorities say the program is designed to give local citizens and their community's police officers an opportunity to learn more about each other, and develop strong relationships between the two entities and the neighborhoods they serve. The ten-week program is open to those 18 and older, who live or work in Gary, and that applicants will have to undergo a background check, and possibly, a brief interview prior to be accepted to the academy, which is limited to 20 participants at I-U Northwest and 30 participants at the Gary Police Department. The deadline to register is December 28th, and to apply or get an application, contact or stop by either the Gary Police Department, or I-U Northwest.
