As of midnight this morning, the National Weather Service says Chicago surpassed the record for latest first measurable snowfall – a record that was set on December 16, 1965. Measurable snowfall generally means a tenth-of-an-inch or more.

Last week, Chicago broke another snow record – for longest stretch of days between measurable snowfalls at 281. Today looks to be the 288th straight day without measurable snow in the city. The previous record of 280 days was set in 1994.

But just before Winter officially begins this Friday morning, 5:11 Central Standard Time, we could be seeing snow on the ground in the Region and Chicago. The National Weather Service says a winter storm will affect parts of the western great lakes this Wednesday night and Thursday, with snow tapering off Thursday night.
