'Romeo' Update from HSNI

Veterinary expenses are mounting as Region residents help a rescued pit bull recuperate.  The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana reports that "Romeo’s wounds look horrible," but he is doing better and is responding to antibiotics and is still on pain medication.

"His wounds have been cleaned but in the process of cleaning the wounds the vet found many more puncture wounds. One wound is deep within his sinus cavity which is a concern, but is treatable. Part of the ear may have to be removed because of the intense infection. He also has many older healed wounds on his legs.

"His wounds must be treated and cleaned every day which is a painful process, but through it all Romeo is loving and wags his tail. Dr. Sheena Dadkah from the Munster Animal Hospital is his attending veterinarian commented that “Romeo’s whole weight is his big heart.” And that he is “so loving and sweet!”  “Everyone at the Munster Animal Hospital has fallen in love with him”

Romeo has many weeks of care ahead of him. We would like to thank everyone who has donated so far to “Romeo’s Rescue Fund”.

Pet Food Recall Expanded

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm348786.htm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 19, 2013 - Natura Pet Products is voluntarily expanding its March 29, 2013 recall of dry pet foods because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall now includes all dry pet food products and treats with expiration dates prior to and including March 24, 2014. Please see the table below for details of affected products.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Sampling conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Salmonella in additional dry pet food and a cat pet treat. In an abundance of caution, Natura is also recalling product made in the surrounding timeframe. This action affects dry pet foods and treats only; no canned wet food or biscuits are affected by this announcement.

The affected products are sold through veterinary clinics and select pet specialty retailers nationwide and in Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Costa Rica, as well as online.

Consumers who have purchased these pet foods should discard them. For additional information, consumers may visit www.naturapet.com. For a product replacement or refund call Natura toll-free at 800-224-6123. (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM CST).

Kibble Games 2013

Bowl a game or three, get a team together for corn hole, and enjoy a day of fun while helping hungry pets in Porter County! The Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry will host The Kibble Games 2013 from 2 – 5 pm June 22 at Inman’s Bowling & Recreation in Valparaiso. Recreation throughout the day includes bowling (including shoes), billiards and corn hole, plus inflatables for the kids, and is perfect for couples, families, and competitive teams of six.

Tickets for all ages if purchased ahead are $20, with day of purchase tickets priced at $25. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a paid adult. Each ticket-holder will be automatically entered into a raffle for an outstanding door prize, and tickets will be sold for a 50/50 raffle. Inman’s snack bar and bar will be open for your enjoyment.

Proceeds from the event will go toward operational costs in order to keep the doors open to continue to help the cats and dogs of low-income Porter County residents. “Our financial goal for this event is $2,000, which will help pay utilities and insurance on our donated space. “Without the community donations we couldn't keep the doors open,” said founder Michelle Duca. “The actual cost is about $4,500 a year.
