About Spay the Stray 5K

Spay the Stray 5K is dedicated in memory of Bill and Helen Evans. An all-around athlete at Thornton Fractional South High School and the first to qualify for the Illinois state cross country competition, Bill Evans passed away suddenly from a brain tumor shortly before entering his senior year of high school.

Bill’s mother, Helen Evans, worked for the Lan-Oak Park District for many years and asked the park district to host a race in honor of his memory. For 33 years, the park district hosted Bill and Helen Evans memorial run, named for Helen after her passing, before joining forces with HSCA for a combined race in 2010.

About Humane Society Calumet Area
Founded by concerned citizen Miss Evelyn Sweitzer in 1941, Humane Society Calumet Area aims to lead the community in the humane treatment of animals by providing vital community services. In 2013, more than 1,500 homeless animals found homes through HSCA and many lost animals were reunited with their families. Additional HSCA services include spay and neuter surgeries for families with financial hardship at the Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic, pet therapy teams who visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities and a humane education team that teaches local children about pet safety and compassion.

Local Union Carpenters Help LaPorte Co Small Animal Shelter

Local union carpenters of the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters (IKORCC) recently lent a hand at the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter. In early April, three IKORCC carpenters volunteered their skills to complete the Small Animal Shelter’s building addition and cat room renovation. In four days, the carpenters gutted and remodeled the cat room by installing new fiberglass-reinforced panels on the walls, new ceilings, lights, new cabinetry and trim and a new window. “It’s an honor for us to be able to help a great local organization. Serving the community is at the heart of IKORCC, and it truly shows in the volunteer service of each of the carpenters who helped out with this project,” said Scott Cooley, IKORCC Senior Representative. The Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters represents more than 32,000 professional tradespeople in 43 locals in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and parts of West Virginia and Tennessee and is an affiliate of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.

“I cannot thank them enough,” said Jane Bernard, LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter Director. “They came to our rescue when funds ran short, and we would not have been able to complete the project if it wasn’t for their commitment to provide the labor and expertise to get the job done. The finished room is such an improved environment for our cats spending time at the shelter and also very welcoming for the public to view our cats. We truly appreciate the hard work that went into upgrading our cat room.” The LaPorte County Animal Shelter provides animal control services for all unincorporated areas of LaPorte County and also operates the county animal shelter. It is located at 2855 West State Road 2 in La Porte, Ind.
