Water temp in the MC harbor & Trail Cr at Springland Ave was 45° F.
Just a reminder to all anglers fishing Trail Cr: No fishing is allowed within 100' upstream of the Trail Cr Sea Lamprey Barrier or downstream to the Pottawatomie Country Club Golf Course property line located adjacent to Springland Ave in MC. Personnel with the USFWS Jordon River NFH stocked up to 50,000 lake trout fingerlings near the Coast Guard Station in MC during the evening of 11/21/13.
We ask that all anglers fishing near the Coast Guard Station & the Lighthouse Pier to gently release any of these fingerlings that they may have accidentally caught while targeting other gamefish.
Distributed throughout the Great Lakes, the lake whitefish is a subfamily member of the salmons that spends most of its time in the deep waters of Lake Michigan. This cold-water species moves into shallower waters during early spring and fall to spawn, becoming more accessible to anglers. A popular foodfish, the whitefish has a subtle pearl color on its back and sides and averages 2-5 lbs in size.
Bait: Salmon eggs, pieces of nightcrawlers
Depth: Fish bait right on the bottom
Over the next couple of weeks, shore anglers fishing off the Lighthouse Pier in Michigan City may start to catch lake whitefish. Productive baits for whitefish include one or two salmon eggs or small pieces of nightcrawlers fished right on the bottom.
Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. The lake trout has a white mouth, teeth and gums, a caudal fin that is deeply forked and a body color that is light to dark gray with light spots.
Bait: Spoons, bodybaits, jigs
Depth: Up to 45 FOW
Boat anglers who have braved the rough conditions reported very good action with LAT up to 18 lbs caught. One of the best areas to fish is at the Port of IN which can be accessed by way of Portage Marina. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, a submerged reef is just N of existing breakwall. The key to fishing this area is to keep your lures just on top of the reef. LAT can be caught by trolling spoons & crankbaits along its length. Another effective means of catching LAT is vertical jigging. If lake conditions permit it, simply anchor your boat over the reef, attach your favorite bucktail, leadhead with a plastic body or jigging spoons & drop the lure to the bottom. Snap your wrist to make it hop & then flutter back down.
Rainbow or steelhead trout
Ever popular among Indiana anglers is the trout family, which includes the brown, lake and rainbow or steelhead trout. Many fisherman can be spotted on the shores during spawning season when the trout begin their runs into the tributaries. Rainbow or steelhead trout have a white mouth, teeth and gums and small black spots on their backs, sides, and caudal and dorsal fins. The caudal fin margin of the rainbow or steelhead trout is square and the fish has 9-12 anal fin rays.
Bait: Tribs: Shrimp, spawn bags, N/C, spinners
Depth: Tribs: Deeper runs & pools
Last weekend thunderstorms brought in fresh STT into area tribs. Anglers fishing Trail/Salt Cr reported action throughout the creek. Anglers hitting the E Br Little Cal reported most of the action in the lower reaches; however, a few were caught in the middle reaches. As been the case for much of the season, spawn sacs continue to be the hot bait with shrimp a distant second. Anglers need to keep the baits just ticking the bottom in the deeper holes & runs. When fishing conditions are tough, a few anglers swear by small 1/32nd or even 1/64th ounce microjigs tipped with a waxworm or two. Again, fish it near the bottom in the deepest holes & runs & also the tail outs of pools. Aggressive STT will hit spinners, especially around snags adjacent to deeper water.
