In the Region and elsewhere including New York City, squirrels are doing something to help them deal with the heat. It’s called “splooting” – where they’re lying down flat on their stomach on the ground or another surface with their back legs stretched out behind them. A tweet from New York City Parks says squirrels stretch out this way on hot days to help reduce body heat. And they said if you a see a squirrel lying down like this, not to worry, he’s just fine.
