Region skywatchers… the month nears to a close with a “Super Flower Blood Moon” This week’s supermoon coincides with a lunar eclipse. A full Moon that’s also a “supermoon” is one that happens to occur when the Moon is at or near its perigee – the point when it’s closest to Earth in its orbit. Almanac.com says the “flower” moon part comes from the flowering blooms the month brings. NASA says this week’s full moon is also being referred to as a “blood moon” because of the reddish hue the moon takes on during a lunar eclipse. The Super Flower Blood Moon of May is early Wednesday morning, May 26th.
