The Valpo Chamber is endorsing the Journeyman Distillery project. “The Valpo Chamber Board of Directors has voted to support the Journeyman Distillery Project as an outstanding economic catalyst for Valparaiso, Indiana” said Rex Richards, President of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce. Richards said the project does several important things for the community, including bringing an extremely successful dining destination. He says the Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan attracts thousands of people to their facility and can and likely will do the same if not more for Valparaiso. Richards says the project also repurposes a large and long-vacant industrial building – a former windshield wiper plant – into a destination tourism attraction. In addition, he says it will extend the city’s downtown to the south and increase the demand for housing in downtown Valparaiso. Richards added that the Journeyman Distillery project is located in Valparaiso’s Opportunity Zone and will encourage additional development in that area. Journeyman Distillery, founded by Valparaiso native Bill Welter in 2010 just north of the state line is one of few organic and kosher distilleries in the U.S. In the news release, Richards also thanked the city of Valparaiso’s Redevelopment Commission for their foresight in acquiring the former Anco building and developing a plan to attract projects like the Journeyman Distillery project to Valparaiso.
