In Michigan City, a dedication ceremony/ribbon cutting for Michigan City High School’s newly-renovated track and field, officially renaming it in honor of an Olympic gold medalist who once taught at the school. Officials say Barbara Jones Slater was also a former coach at Rogers High School, and among many other honors and awards is a four-time Olympic Gold Medalist. She received her first Olympic Gold Medal at the age of 15 during the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, also becoming the youngest woman to win gold in track and field. Jones Slater, who taught at Rogers from 1978 to 1984, now lives in Georgia and was in Michigan City for this week’s event. A girls track meet took place after the ceremony.
