In Valparaiso, the president of Valparaiso University said they wanted to “extend their deepest gratitude” to first responders who helped with evacuations and extinguished the fire Friday that destroyed the Art-Psychology Building. The message from VU President Jose Padilla said the building, built in the 1940s, is permanently closed, and two other buildings are closed until further notice. He also said there will be a 20-minute service of remembrance and thanksgiving on the lawn east of the Art-Psychology building Wednesday morning (May 4, 10 am). Several departments responded, including Valparaiso Fire, Valparaiso University Police, and fire crews from Chesterton, Morgan Township, Washington Township, and Union Township. There were no reports of injuries. Officials continue to investigate the cause. Here is a link to the full letter, which also talks about the history of the building and include a photo when it was still under construction.
