The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) will temporarily close and detour Route 12 and Porter/LaPorte County Line Road just west of Michigan City today/ Thursday May 12. The work is necessary for the South Shore Commuter line Double Track Northwest Indiana construction project, which is adding a second track between Gary and Michigan City. The two-week closure/detour will begin on Thursday, May 12, 2022 beginning at 7:00am and the road is expected to reopen on Thursday, May 26 at 7:00am. Detour for Eastbound Traffic on RT 12 heading past Michigan City to the East (see red arrows on map below)
In the town of Pines turn right onto US 520 South (also known as Maple St) After heading south for about a block, turn left onto RT 20 East Continue on RT 20 East for about 7 miles Continue straight across E Michigan Blvd as the road name changes to SR 212 Continue about 3 miles along SR 212 North to reconnect with RT 12 eastbound
Detour for Westbound RT 12 traffic traveling from East of Michigan City to West of Michigan City past County Line Road (see blue arrows on map below)
Just past the town of Michiana Shores, take the left ramp onto SR 212 South
Continue about 3 miles along SR 212 South
Continue straight across E Michigan Blvd as the road name changes to RT 20
Continue on RT 20 West for about 7 miles In the town of Pines turn right onto US 520 North
After heading north for about a block turn left at the stop sign on RT 12 Westbound
Detour for Eastbound Traffic on RT 12 heading into downtown Michigan City (No Trucks)
In the town of Pines turn right onto US 520 South (also known and Maple St)
After heading south for about a block turn left onto RT 20 East
Continue on RT 20 East for about 3 miles Turn left onto Ohio St and head north into downtown Michigan City
