The National Weather Service says there’s an elevated fire risk in Northwest Indiana today, Thursday June 30, 2022. In a Special Weather Statement, meteorologists said, “The combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity, warm temperatures, and dry fuels will result in an increased risk of fire spread. Consider postponing planned outdoor burning and take extra precaution with fireworks and smoking materials.”
There’s also an Air Quality Alert for the Region today. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is forecasting high levels of ozone in all regions of the state.” Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high. Children, the elderly, and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors,” said the announcement from IDEM. “Ground-level ozone is formed when sunlight and hot weather combine with vehicle exhaust, factory emissions, and gasoline vapors. Ozone in the upper atmosphere blocks ultraviolet radiation, but ozone near the ground is a lung irritant that can cause coughing and breathing difficulties for sensitive populations.”
