Region residents will be gathering across Northwest Indiana at ceremonies commemorating the 21st anniversary of 9/11.
In Crown Point, Region residents are invited to gather at “Remembering 9-11, Crown Point Community 9-11 Memorial Service” this Sunday, September 11th, at 7 pm. The service will be on the front lawn of First United Methodist Church at the corner of South and Main streets.
In Crown Point, participants will climb 1,980 steps, the number of stairs in the World Trade Center towers that fell on 9/11. The Hometown Happenings 9/11 Stair Climb, 17 times up and down the 120 steps of the Lake County Fairgrounds Grandstand, takes place Sunday September 11th. Each participant will be given the name of one of the 412 emergency workers who lost their lives on that day. A Statue of Liberty Climb, 354 steps, is also available. In Hammond, the city will hold a remembrance ceremony in honor of the twenty-first anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. The ceremony will be held Sunday, September 11th beginning at 9am at the State Line Obelisk and Archway Plaza on the Lake Michigan shoreline, in honor of those who lost their lives that day, and to pay tribute to first responders. The event will feature a performance by the Hammond and Lake County Police Bagpipes, a 21-gun salute and a joint Hammond-Police-and-Fire Honor Guard. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved to the Hammond Marina Clipper Room.
In Schererville, the Schererville Police Department invites the community to a 9/11 memorial service on the anniversary of the attacks. Police and fire personnel will be among those gathered at the Schererville 9/11 Memorial between the hours of 10am – 4pm, and the announcement said visitors can stop by the memorial and reflect on the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001. The memorial is located at the corner of Junction and Joliet streets near the Schererville Police Station.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb is directing flags at state facilities across Indiana to be flown at half-staff in honor of Patriot Day. Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, September 11, 2022. The announcement from the Governor’s office also asks businesses and residents statewide to lower their flags to half-staff in remembrance of the victims of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.
