In Valparaiso, Mayor Matt Murphy says he will not be seeking re-election next year. Murphy said in a statement his family’s small business was acquired by Urschel Laboratories and he has been offered a professional opportunity that will require his daily presence at Urschel headquarters in Chesterton beginning in January 2024. “I want to be abundantly clear: My focus hasn’t changed now that I’ve made this announcement – we will continue full speed ahead to move our city forward in the new year as we have major projects happening all over Valparaiso,” Murphy said. Murphy was elected to his first-term as mayor in 2019. Murphy also went on to say he is “not completely stepping away” as he intends “to run for City Council in 2024.” The letter was posted Wednesday on the city’s website.
