The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana treated 500 region kids to “A Christmas to Remember” Thursday night, featuring food, music, dancing, fun and presents, and ensured no club members were left out of the holiday magic. Clubs Director, Wendy Meng says the hard work is worth it.
“It’s really an exciting time”, Meng said. “The ability for volunteers and donors to be part of such a grand and heartwarming event, to see the kids get things they put on their wish lists… being able to see these children have this joyous event, it’s why I do what I do.”
Each region Boys & Girls Club director chose deserving club members to participate in the event, now in its fifth year. Local businessman, Randy Hall was among those who came up with the idea.
“This event got started by having a simple meeting with the Boys & Girls Clubs and talking about some needs they had”, Hall said. “I was fortunate enough to be a part of the original group that put some donors together.”
Donor and volunteer, Brian Specht says “A Christmas to Remember” exemplifies the word community.
“To see these kids open gifts that they not only want, but need, it’s most rewarding, and [the event] keeps getting better and better each year”, Specht said.
Club member, Caden of South Haven got items off his wish list, including a Pokemon ball and Legos, a soccer ball and boots. Other club members, like Eli of Cedar Lake were just thankful to open a bundle of gifts, no matter what he received.
“A Christmas to Remember” involved over 200 volunteers who gathered and wrapped gifts, served dinner, entertained, and helped club members with their gift packages. Gift bundles are individually tailored to participating Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana members, who wrote “dear Santa” letters back in October.
