In Gary, when the temperature is 32 degrees or below the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will activate the warming centers. If transportation is needed, the citizen can board any City of Gary Bus/Van with the code 32. The bus operator will make every effort to stop as close to a warming center location as possible

In East Chicago, the city’s Fire Department advises that due to the extreme cold weather, the Martin Luther King Center on Melville Avenue will be a designated “Warming Shelter” open from 7 pm to 7 am, Thursday and Friday, December 22nd and 23rd, due to inclement weather. COVID guidelines require everyone entering the shelter to wear a mask. Hand sanitizer will be available.

In Portage, officials say with dangerous cold in the winter storm forecast, Portage officials say Woodland Park buildings on Willowcreek Road will be opened as a warming station as needed. A post at the city’s Facebook page said the buildings are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. After hours or weekends, residents can call the parks and staff will open the buildings as needed. The Portage Township YMCA on Willowcreek Road, will also serve as a warming shelter. In Valparaiso, due to the holiday closures of Valparaiso’s traditional warming centers, Valparaiso Fire #2, located on Cumberland Drive, will be open as a daytime warming center from 7 am to 8 pm daily on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 23-25.
