Travel advisories remain in effect for most of Indiana, including locally LaPorte, Starke and Pulaski counties after snowfall Wednesday that continues this morning. That’s according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security County Travel Status Map. Some counties in central and northeast Indiana were in the higher “travel watch” category. Fort Wayne has broken its snow record for January 25, receiving six-point-two inches yesterday. The old record of five-point-four inches was set in 1978 during the blizzard. Snow in Fort Wayne has risen to nine-point-three inches for January, slightly above average.
The winter storm that hit Indiana yesterday included thundersnow. The rare phenomenon is from heavy snow bands with a small amount of instability. That can cause thunder and lightning, with the first lightning strike happening just south of Indianapolis in Johnson County just before 8:15 a.m. Eastern Time. A second lightning strike happened in Elwood around 9:30 a.m. ET.
