First Lady Dr. Jill Biden visited Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso Monday. The First Lady spent time with faculty, students and members of the labor force showing her support for the nation’s community colleges. The school gave her a tour of the renewable energy labs where she met with high school students in dual enrollment to discuss and demonstrate what they have learned. Dr. Biden said community colleges will train the future workforce. “Dual enrollment courses, which a lot of these kids are in, registered apprenticeships, community colleges partnering with businesses to train workers in growing industries,” said the First Lady. “These aren’t a Democrat idea or a Republican idea, they’re American ideas championed by leaders from both parties. And for many years, they’ve helped students from all communities—red and blue, urban and suburban, and everywhere in between— help you get the training that you need for the jobs of the future.” The First Lady was joined on the tour of the college by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk and First District Congressman Frank J. Mrvan. Also speaking during yesterday’s visit was Ivy Tech Community College President Sue Ellspermann.
